PHB-101 INTRO TO PUBLIC HEALTH (3 Credits)

An introductory course for Public Health majors that will explore the concepts surrounding public health and its influence on every individual. Topics within the course will focus on the determinants of health and disease and how interventions (laws, policies, healthcare) can improve the health of the population.

PHB-102 GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH (3 Credits)

An introductory course on global health that illustrates the health issues facing developing countries as realted to access to healthcare, child and adolescent health and health disparities. Success stories and possible solutions to these global health problems will also be discussed.

PHB-201 BIOSTATISTICS IN PUBLIC HEALTH (3 Credits)

An introductory course for Public Health majors that will provide a fundamental background to understand and interpret biostatistics in public health applications.

PHB-202 MARKETING & COMMUNICATION IN PUBLIC HEALTH (3 Credits)

This course will teach students the essential components of communication and marketing for public health. Strategies to frame health marketing campaigns will be discussed so students will be prepared to apply these priniciples in multiple public health sectors including government, healthcare and community health organizations.

PHB-203 PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATOIN & ADVOCACY (3 Credits)

This course teaches students to effectively communicate health education messages and positively influence the norms and behaviors of both individuals and communities. The course further explores principles of learning, goal setting, behavioral objectives, teaching methodologies, evaluation, professional ethics, and legislation. Students will build the foundation for selecting and applying community and public health education methods, acquire tools necessary for applying community and public health education and health promotion, examine health communication and media, and understand community organizing, advocacy (i.e. policy proposals & communication with legislators), and the development of sustainable coalitions.

PHB-301 HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAMMING (3 Credits)

Public health professionals must be able to plan and evaluate health interventions. This course will introduce students to the broad range of public health programming options with applications to social science, global, community and environmental health.

PHB-302 DIVERSITY & INCLUSION IN PUBLIC HEALTH (3 Credits)

Public Health in the United States has made great progress, but there are still health and life expectancy inequities in our country. This course will examine disparities and identify solutions to improve outcomes and patient satisfaction in diverse populations with the United States.

PHB-303 PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION & EVALUATION (3 Credits)

This course introduces students to the concepts and principles surrounding implemenation and evaluation of health promotion programs intended to promote community and population health while preventing disease in a variety of settings. The foundation of the course will be the skills necessary to develop an implementation and evaluation strategy for a planned health promotion initiative, taking into consideration the phases of implementation and evaluation that include coordinating delivery of the intervention consistent with the implementation plan, delivering health education and promotion inverventions, and monitoring/evaluating the implementation. Students will be introduced to ethical considerations, and resources and skills required to implement and evaluaute a successful health promotion program. In order to evaluate the program, students will adopt or modify existing instruments for data collection, implement data collection procedures, and prepare date to disseminate findings.

PHB-441 PUBLIC HEALTH LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT (3 Credits)

An essential course for an evolving time in public health's history. The advances, challenges and a myriad of events that are affecting public health currently call for informed leaders who can manage public health organizations effectively. Students will learn how experts in community-based prevenetion programs to those at the frontline of emergency preparedness navigate these incredible experiences. Conent will also include systems thinking, social entreneurship, social media and integrated information management. In addition, students will engage in an ethically sound, culturally responsive health education and promotion collaboration with local agencies, community organizers and other essential stakeholders.

PHB-442 INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION & PROFESSIONALISM (1 Credit)

A short course that emphasizes the role of interprofessional education (IPE) in healthcare that translates intro better practices for public health. One course focus will be onthe IPE Collaborative Core Competencies and how these are defined and applied in today's health care settings. The other focus of this course will be engagement in professional development to maintain proficiency and the promotion of the health education profession to stakeholders and the public. Public Health professionals are an integral part of the IPE team when adopting these interprofessional education and professionalism practices for population health programming and implementation.

PHB-499 PROFESSIONALISM INDEPENDENT STUDY IN PUBLIC HEALTH (1-3 Credits)

This is an independent research study course where students will develop a research project that reflects on their learning and educational experiences in public health.
